Jean S. Maxson, of Grahamsville, NY, passed away on February 14, 2024. She was 78 years old.

Jean was born on October 5, 1945, in Syracuse, NY to Vernon and Thelma (Tanner) Speich. She grew up in South Onondaga, NY, and early on, manifested musical talent. After graduating from Onondaga Central High School, she went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education from Syracuse University. Jean furthered her education at Cortland College, where she obtained a Master’s in Elementary Education and a Master of Education Science in Administration and Supervision.

Jean started her music career in North Syracuse School District as a music educator. She then served at State University of New York Potsdam Crane School of Music as a supervisor of student music teachers. Later in her career, she was employed by Monroe-Woodbury School District as the K-12 District Music Coordinator, then assumed various Assistant Principal positions within Monroe-Woodbury, finally serving as Principal of Pine Tree Elementary School until her retirement. 

After retirement, Jean continued to work as an Interim Principal/Assistant Principal for Goshen School District and Eldred School Districts. Always one to share her musical expertise, Jean also proudly served as Zone 9 Representative and Judge for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA).

Jean had numerous interests; she enjoyed golf, gardening, travel, reading, and playing piano. She was a member of South Onondaga United Methodist Church, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Lovingly known as “Grandma Jean,” she enjoyed her loved ones most of all. She truly cherished spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Jean is survived by her daughter Dena Schulte; her brother-in-law, Richard Abbott; her grandchildren, Michael Schulte, Joseph Schulte, Emily Starner, and Jacob Schulte; her nieces, Angela, and Natalie Abbott; her great-niece, Scarlett Carpenter; and numerous friends. Jean is predeceased by her husband, Curtis Maxson, her sister Deborah Abbott, and her son-in-law Michael Schulte. “Grandma Jean” will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her. 

Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in South Onondaga. Friends and loved ones may honor Jean at a Memorial Service which will take place on March 23, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Grahamsville Reformed Church, Route 55, Grahamsville, NY.  A Celebration of Life Fellowship will be hosted in the Church Hall immediately following the church service.
